Arabian
The Arab is the oldest and purest breed, with
drawings dating from Yemen 4000 years ago, and Egypt 3300 years ago. It is
usually 14-15 hands, but is never referred to as a pony. The Arab has
influenced almost all modern breeds, notably the Thoroughbred which dates back
to three founding Arabian sires which were imported to Britain: Byerley Turk,
captured at the Battle of Buda in 1690; The Darley Arabian, born in Syria in
about 1700; and The Godolphin Arabian, born in Yemen, 1704. It is now
found all over the world, and is easily recognizable for its dainty dished face,
long neck, short back, high croup and very high tail carriage.
